MLK Holiday DC Reimagining Public Safety: “The History of Policing in America.”
The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday DC Committee (MLKHDC) and the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute Alumni Association (MYLIAA) in partnership with other community organizations are launching our “2021 MLK Holiday DC Reimagining Public Safety” discussion series.
On Saturday, January 16, 2021, from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, the MLKHDC and MYLIAA will host the first discussion in a series of events titled, “The History of Policing in America.”
The event will feature Dr. Alex Vitale, author of The End of Policing, Dr. Joe Richardson, Acting Chair of the African-American Studies Department, University of Maryland, Samantha P. Davis, Founder & Executive Director of the Black Swan Academy, Ra’mya Davis, youth representative of Pathways 2 Power, United Leaders 4 Freedom, DC Girls Coalition, and members of the MBYLI DC Youth Government.
This year, in remembrance of Dr. King’s legacy and adherence to COVID-19 restrictions, the organizers will hold a virtual conversation via Zoom.

The program format will involve a panel discussion, opening remarks from featured speaker Markus Batchelor, former Ward 8 Representative for the D.C. State Board of Education, and a Q/A session that will include pre-submitted questions from the community. We will have youth moderators to field all audience questions.
